Reflection
Reflection – The Torus
This course was insightful but extremely
challenging. The reason it was challenging was the nature of the works
required. Each project required a large amount of man hours in the workshop.
This was so challenging to full time work commitments and workshop opening
hours. The reason I have chosen to reflect on the Torus is because it was a
project I believe I completed adequately but one that could have been much more
effectively if some techniques were changed and I had more time to work on it.
I began the process by using a mallet and a
log with a channel shaped out of it to shape the middle channel along the
sheet. This log acted as a great mould for this channel and also allowed the
piece to curve by applying pressure on each end of the sheet with the log
holding the centre still. This technique successfully created two of the three
different curves on the shape but it had an inherent impact on the two curves
found along the sheet. Due to the shape already formed it made it almost
impossible to utilise the English wheel to shape the side channels. Another technique I attempted to shape the centre channel as well as the two edges over the steel post attached to the bench. This was somewhat effective but still not the most effective strategy.
If I were to complete the Torus again I
would definitely utilise the English wheel more than hammering and bending over
the log. Although it takes more time, it would allow all three shapes required
in the Taurus to be shaped together more effectively. Of course this relies on
more time being available to be complete but creates a more holistic approach
to the overall shape in lieu of completing one curve at a time. By slowly
working and compressing each curve through the wheel the Torus will begin to
take shape. Although the shape and curves will not be as “aggressive” as it was
when the shape was hammered, the consistency of the curves will be improved
throughout. The time frame in which this project can be completed also affects
I would additionally place a greater
attention on the planning and research stages. By planning in depth the project
will run smoother and the finished product will be greatly improved. Utilising the course blog and videos such as this one - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GfCjDh4m8m8 would aid in creating the needed bends. I personally struggled with remembering the suggested techniques from the demo and creating my own. Using the resources such as those listed above would have most likely improved the final product. This is
the most important lesson I have learnt throughout this BEIL course. If I had
greater time and researched further, I believe the end result of the Taurus
project would have been excellent rather than adequate.
The course itself was enjoyable and a great change of pace and scenery for someone who has completed zero hands on courses and works full time in an office. It was a struggle at times to find enough time and space in the workshop to complete the assignments but all in all a rewarding course.
