BEIL0014 - Bowl

The Bowl 
  • The bowl was the easiest of all the projects. The sheet was cut into a circle to allow us to shape the sheet into a bowl shape in the later stages
  • The sheet was first hit on the outside on a stump to create the folded edge
  • Following this, the middle sections were hit on a sand bag to hollow out the centre 
  • Imperfections were hit out with mallets and then the bowl was rolled to flatten the bowl and provide a smoother finish

The Tray The tray saw individuals find a partner within the course and look to work in tandem in coordinating two similar pieces. The aim of this assignment was to make the shape of the pieces to be as similar as possible. The process began with measurement and setting out of the shape on the aluminium sheet. Generally with all assignments if this was done well then it would pay dividends during the later stages. Utilising the template cut from wood, a rough outline was created on the aluminium sheet. This should be completed with as much care and accuracy as possible as this will greatly affect the end result. Once the outline was set, the shape was cut using the guillotine, snips and levered cutters. After this was completed the sheet was slowly moulded around the form. Reflection

Reflection – The Torus   This course was insightful but extremely challenging. The reason it was challenging was the nature of the works required. Each project required a large amount of man hours in the workshop. This was so challenging to full time work commitments and workshop opening hours. The reason I have chosen to reflect on the Torus is because it was a project I believe I completed adequately but one that could have been much more effectively if some techniques were changed and I had more time to work on it. I began the process by using a mallet and a log with a channel shaped out of it to shape the middle channel along the sheet. This log acted as a great mould for this channel and also allowed the piece to curve by applying pressure on each end of the sheet with the log holding the centre still. Fuel Tank

The Fuel Tank Within this assignment, we worked in groups to create seperate components of a full sized full tank. We utilised programs and technologies such as slicer and laser cutting to create a mould for the tank. We then used this base to model each piece, ensuring that they were as accurate as possible. See below for what techniques our group implemented to complete the necessary pieces of the tank. 3D Model There are various techniques to get a 3d model of a fuel tank for this project. The first is to take photos of a fuel tank of all angles to then put into the software Recap, by Autodesk, to reconstruct into a virtual 3D model. Second, is to measure the fuel tank and select from a variety of 3D CAD software to then model the tank. Third, is to find a pre-existing 3D model fuel tank online and use this as your base model.
